Summer with bicycles in Åland

We headed with my girlfriend to bikepacking trip to the Åland islands. This trip was made in cooperation with Visit Åland and together we planned bicycle route that gave us a great way to see the Åland and its archipelago by bicycles.

Suuntasimme tyttöystäväni kanssa polkupyöräreissulle Ahvenanmaan saaristoon. Tämä matka toteutettiin yhteistyössä Visit Ålandin kanssa. Yhdessä suunnittelimme polkupyöräily reitin, joka mahdollista meille upean mahdollisuuden nähdä Ahvenanmaata ja sen saaristoa pyöräillen.

We started our journey with our bicycles towards the archipelago of Åland by taking a ferry from Vuosnainen towards Åva in Åland archipelago. When we arrived to Åva we quickly noticed how good it was to ride our bicycles in the Åland islands. The roads were smooth, and the views made you just smile all the time. Smiling we started to cycle towards south with our fully equipped bikepacking bikes. Destination was towards Torsholma to catch the second ferry to the next island in the Åland archipelago.

Aloitimme matkamme polkupyöriemme kanssa kohti Ahvenanmaan saaristoa, hyppäämällä lauttaan Vuosnaisissa, josta jatkoimme kohti Åvan saarta Ahvenanmaan saaristossa. Kun saavuimme Åvan saarelle, huomasimme nopeasti, kuinka upeaa polkupyöräily Ahvenanmaan saaristossa oli. Tiet olivat sileitä ja maisemat olivat niin upeat, että et voinut kuin hymyillä. Hymyillen aloimme pyöräillä täysin varustetuilla retkipyörillämme kohti etelää. Suuntasimme kohti Torsholmaa, josta otimme toisen lautan seuraavalle saarelle Ahvenanmaan saaristossa.

Small but exiting island called Lappo

The ferry arrived at the island called Lappo, a small island in the Åland archipelago. Despite the small size, it is exiting place. They have restaurant, shop, very beautiful harbour, and few accommodation options. We stayed at Pellas and our room was right next to the harbour. During the evening we just filled our bellies with the great food from Restaurang Galeasen and enjoyed the evening in the Åland archipelago. The next morning, we had spare time before the departure of next ferry, so we decided to play some disc golf. In the island they have a great course offering some easier and more challenging holes with an amazing archipelago view. An activity worth of trying.

Lautta saapui saarelle nimeltä Lappo, joka on pieni saari Ahvenanmaan saaristossa. Saari todella on pieni, mutta samalla mielenkiintoinen. Saarelta löytyy ravintola, kauppa, kaunis satama ja muutama majoitusvaihtoehto. Me yövyimme ensimmäisen yömme Pellaksessa, aivan sataman tuntumassa. Illalla täytimme vatsamme Ravintola Galeasenin maukkaalla ruoalla ja nautimme illasta Ahvenanmaan saaristossa. Seuraavana aamuna meillä oli aikaa, ennen kuin seuraava lautta lähtisi liikkeelle, joten päätimme pelata fresbeegolffia. Saarella on mahtava rata, joka sisältää sekä helpompia, että haastavampia väyliä upeissa saaristomaisemissa. Ehdottomasti kokeilemisen arvoinen aktiviteetti.

Bicycles in the Åland island ferries

Getting the bicycles to the ferries in Åland islands is relatively easy. Just remember that during the peak season, it is good to book the spot for the bike in advance from Ålandstrafiken which operates the ferries in the Åland islands. And remember to bring some bungee cords to fasten you bicycle securely.

Polkupyörien kuljettaminen Ahvenanmaan saariston lautoilla on suhteellisen helppoa. On kuitenkin hyvä muistaa, että etenkin sesonkiaikana, kannattaa varata liput polkupyörille etukäteen Ålandstrafikenilta, joka operoi lauttoja Ahvenanmaan saarilla. Ja muista ottaa mukaan myös muutama mustekala, jotta saat polkupyörän tukevasti kiinni.

Towards the main island of Åland

When we had enjoyed our time in the Åland archipelago, it was our time to head towards the main island. We took a ferry from Lappo to Hummelvik where we started cycling towards the main island. When entering the main island of Åland from Hummelvik you will go through Bomarsund fortress ruins. This fortress was once the most magnificent structure in Åland islands. It was built as an outpost to defend Åland. However, it was destroyed during the Crimean War in 1854. This place is full of history and it is good place to stop on your bikepacking trip through the Åland islands.

Kun olimme nauttineet ajastamme Ahvenanmaan saaristossa, oli meidän aikamme suunnata kohti Ahvenanmaan pääsaarta. Otimme lauta Lapon saarelta Hummelvikiin, josta aloimme pyöräillä kohti pääsaarta. Kun lähestyt Ahvenanmaan pääsaarta Hummelvikistä päin, kuljet Bomarsundin linnoituksen raunioiden ohi. Tämä linnoitus oli aikanaan Ahvenanmaan suurenmoisin rakennelma. Se rakennettiin etuvartioasemaksi, puolustamaan Ahvenanmaata. Vuonna 1854 se kuitenkin tuhottiin, osana Krimin sotaa. Paikka on täynnä historiaa ja se on ehdottomasti pysähtymisen arvoinen paikka Ahvenanmaan pyöräreissulla.

Perfect day on the Åland islands

The previous night we stayed in Saltvik Bed & Breakfast in Kvarnbo. In early morning we headed with our bicycles to the one of the most famous locations in Åland island, to the castle of Kastelholm. This is genuinely interesting place and you should definitely visit there while in Åland. It is a place packed with history, excitement, and wonders. You can feel the medieval atmosphere when exploring the castle. The area where the castle is located, is easy to access with bike and there are also other museum and attractions located in the area.

Amazed by the history, we continued cycling towards north of the Åland main island. Our destination was Grannäs Äppel which is located in Finström municipality in the Åland islands. They produce delicious apple juice, cold pressed from fresh apples and you really can taste it. It is hands down the best apple juice that I have drunk. They also have a nice bistro out there where you can get delicious meals to enjoy with the apple juice.

Edellisen yön me yövyimme Saltvik Bed & Breakfest majatalossa, Kvarnbon kylässä. Aikaisin aamulla suuntasimme polkupyörillämme yhteen Ahvenanmaan kuuluisimmista nähtävyyksistä, Kastelholman linnaan. Tämä on todella mielenkiintoinen kohde ja suosittelen lämpimästi käymään siellä Ahvenanmaan vierailun aikana. Linna on täynnä historiaa, jännitystä ja mielenkiintoisia asioita, joita ihmetellä. Pystyt aistimaan keskiaikaisen tunnelman, kun tutkit linnan sokkeloisia kujia ja käytäviä. Alue, jolla Kastelholman linna sijaitsee, on helposti saavutettavissa polkupyörällä ja siellä on myös muita kiinnostavia museoita ja nähtävyyksiä.

Pienen historian tunnin jälkeen, jonka saimme Kastelhoman linnassa vierailun aikana, jatkoimme pyöräilyä kohti Ahvenanmaan pohjoisosaa. Määränpäämme oli Grannas Äppel, joka sijaitsee Finnströmmin kunnassa. Grannas Äppel tuottaa äärimmäisen herkullista tuorepuristettua omenamehua ja maku on myös sen mukainen. Kyseessä on ehdottomasti parasta omenamehua, jota olemme ikinä maistaneet. Heillä on myös mukava bistro, josta saa herkullista ruokaa, jota voit syödä terassille omenapuita ihaillen.

Visit at the brewery

After a perfect evening and well slept night in a tent by the ocean in one of the many islands that Åland has to offer, we started our morning with a detour. Our destination was Stallhagen brewery, but we did not want to cycle to there following the straightest route. We wanted to see the Åland a bit more and decided to have some 25 kilometres biking. It was perfect since we had generated a great appetite when we entered the brewery.

At Stallhagen brewery we had a factory tour and tasting. We had not been in any brewery before, so it was nice to see how things work around there. After the tour we had a tasting and a nice lunch at their pub which is located right next to the brewery in same yard. It was interesting to see how the different products work with different kind of tasty foods that we ate for lunch. If you are into beers this is a place to add to your list when visiting the Åland.

Täydellisen illan ja meren äärellä teltassa hyvin nukutun yön jälkeen, Ahvenanmaan yhdessä monista saarista, aloitimme aamumme kiertotiellä. Määränpäämme oli Stallhagen panimo, mutta emme halunneet pyöräillä sinne suorinta tietä. Halusimme nähdä hieman enemmän Ahvenanmaata, joten päätimme polkupyöräillä noin 25 kilometrin verryttelylenkin. Tämä oli loistava idea, koska olimme sopivasti nälkäisiä, kun saavuimme panimolle.

Stallhagenin panimolla, kävimme tehdaskierroksella ja maistelussa. Emme olleet aiemmin vierailleet panimolla, joten oli mukava nähdä miten tehdas ja koko prosessi toimii. Tehdaskierroksen jälkeen oli vuorossa maistelu ja maittava lounas heidän pubissaan, joka sijaitsee aivan tehtaan vieressä. Oli mielenkiintoista kokea kuinka erilaiset panimotuotteet toimivat erilaisten herkullisten ruokien kanssa, joita söimme lounaaksi. Jos olet oluen ystävä, suosittelen ehdottomasti käymään täällä Ahvenanmaan vierailun aikana.

Mariehamn and surroundings with bicycle

Couple last days of our bikepacking trip we spent around Mariehamn, staying in a tent at Gröna Udden Camping. Mariehamn, the capital of Åland, is relatively small but very likeable with its beautiful houses and accessibility. From Mariehamn we had a day trip to Lemland and visited Amalias lemonade factory and Mercedes Chocolaterie. They are in the same house and are excellent destination to bicycle from Mariehamn. We also visited Open Water Brewery which is another fantastic microbrewery along with the Stallhagen.

The other day we had couple of museum visits around the city. Later in the evening, we headed down south to the island of Järsö. This Åland island is a must to visit when biking in Åland island. Stunningly beautiful nature, easy access walking paths and few rest spots to stop and have a lunch break. It is located only half an hour bike ride from Mariehamn, but you really feel like you are further in the Åland archipelago. I can highly recommend looking up this place during your visit in Åland.

Pari viimeistä päiväämme meidän retkipyöräilyreissullamme, vietimme Maarianhaminan ympäristössä. Majoituksena toimi teltta, Gröna Udden Capming retkeilyalueella. Maarianhamina on itsessään melko pieni, mutta sitäkin mukavampi kaupunki kaikkine kauniine taloineen ja saavutettavuutensa ansiosta. Maarianhaminasta pyöräilimme päiväreissulle Lemlandiin ja vierailimme Amalias Limonadfabrik limsatehtaassa ja Mercedes Chocalateria suklaatehtaassa. Ne sijaitsevat samassa rakennuksessa ja ovat loistava päiväretkikohde polkupyörillä Maarianhaminasta. Vierailimme myös Open Water Breweryssä, joka on Stallhagenin ohella toinen upea pienpanimo.

Seuraavana päivänä kävimme parissa kaupungin upeista museoista. Myöhemmin illalla suuntasimme polkupyörillä etelään päin, kohteenamme Järsön saari. Tämä Ahvenanmaan pääsaaren edustalla sijaitseva saari on ehdottomasti vierailemisen arvoinen paikka. Tarjolla on upeaa luontoa, helposti saavutettavissa olevat kävelyreitit ja muutamia lepopaikkoja, joissa nauttia eväitä. Saari sijaitsee vain puolen tunnin pyöräilymatkan päässä Maarianhaminasta, mutta alueella olo tuntuu kuin olisit kauempana Ahvenanmaan saaristossa. Voin lämpimästi suositella täällä käymistä, Ahvenanmaan vierailun aikana.

Cycling in Åland

What we liked when cycling in Åland is that it is made easy. Whether you are bikepacking, road cycling or having just a casual bike ride with your friends, you can be sure that the roads are in good condition and the routes are not boring. You can also explore the Åland archipelago easily with bicycles, thanks to the good ferry network.

Our trip was fantastic and have to say that the perfect weather during our trip made it even more great. If you are looking for a next destination for your biking trip or you already have visited in Åland but you would like to see it differently, I can warmly recommend to explore the Åland with bicycle.

Ahvenanmaalla pyöräilyssä pidimme erityisesti siitä, että se oli tehty helpoksi.
