Exploring Finnish Lapland in Pyhätunturi

Where is the winter

The so-called winter in the Southern Finland was getting on my nerves already. I’m more a summer person, but somewhere inside me lives that Finn who needs a small amount of winter during the year. And with winter I mean snow and minus degrees of Celsius at least one to two months’ time. We had had couple of days when the white coat covered the ground in here, but it melted right away. I needed to get my winter for this year and that’s why I started to plan a trip to Lapland.

Eteläisen Suomen niin kutsuttu talvi rupesi jo raastamaan omia hermojani. Täytyy myöntää, että olen enemmän kesäihmisiä, mutta jossain sisälläni elää se suomalainen, joka tarvitsee annoksen talvea vuoden aikana. Ja talvella tarkoitan tässä yhteydessä lunta ja pakkasta yhdestä kahteen kuukauteen. Muutamana päivänä maa oli saanut valkoisen peitteen, mutta se oli sulanut melkein saman tien pois. Minun täytyi saada ”oma talveni” tälle vuodelle, joten rupesin suunnittelemaan matkaa lappiin.

Location

After numerous hours of planning and contacting different persons I chose that we’ll travel to Pyhätunturi (a fell called Pyhätunturi) in Pelkosenniemi with my girlfriend. It is located well above the Arctic Circle about 50 kilometres north from the city of Kemijärvi. From my investigation I knew that there was snow and minus degrees.

The only drawback about Finnish Lapland is that it is located quite a far away when looking from the capital Helsinki. It might also be a good thing if you look at it from the perspective of road tripping. 

To Pyhätunturi it was over 900 kilometres from my home. I teamed up with Scandia Rent which is the oldest car rentals in Finland. They have over 100 locations around Finland from the southern tip to the Arctic area. From their vast and variable selection of 2500 cars, we found that the Volvo V90 station wagon was perfect for this trip. It is reliable, safe and spacious vehicle that fulfilled our needs perfectly.

Useiden tuntien suunnittelun ja useiden tahojen kontaktoinnin jälkeen päätimme matkustaa tyttöystäväni kanssa Pyhätunturille. Se sijaitsee noin 50 kilometriä Kemijärveltä pohjoiseen, napapiirin pohjoispuolella. Tutkimusteni perusteella siellä olisi lunta ja pakkasta, joten saisimme kunnon annoksen talvea.

Ainoa huono puoli lapissa on se, että se sijaitsee melko kaukana, näin etelästä katsottuna. Tietysti se voi olla myös hyvä asia, jos katsotaan sitä road trip näkökulmasta.

Kotoani Pyhätunturille on yli 900 kilometriä. Matkan ajan tein yhteistyötä Scandia Rentin kanssa, joka on Suomen vanhin autovuokraamo. Heillä on yli sadan toimipisteen kattava verkosto aina Hangosta Sodankylään asti. Kattavasta 2500 auton valikoimasta, josta löytyy autoja joka lähtöön, valitsimme meidän matkaamme parhaiten soveltuvan Volvo V90 farmariauton. Kyseessä on luotettava, turvallinen ja tilava kulkuneuvo, joka täytti kaikki tarpeemme täydellisesti.

Pefect accommodation

We arrived to Pyhätunturi safely on 11th of February. The forecast for the week had turned out to be only few minus degrees and cloudy all the time. So, we would probably not see any Northern Lights or sun even, but we didn’t let those things bother us.

First two days we stayed at Pyhä Igloos. They have these awesome apartments where you have your bed in your own igloo. That accommodation exceeded our expectations completely and the friendly and helpful staff was superb. The owner was really nice, and it was pleasant to chat with him when there was time. They were very helpful towards us and it felt like staying at friends rather than in hotel accommodation.

One thing that I really enjoyed at Pyhä Igloos was that you have your own kitchen where you can cook your food and there are also porridge, tea, coffee, smashed potatoes etc. for you to use. It is a huge benefit if you don’t want to eat in a restaurant every day on your trip. They also have a barbecue hut where you can enjoy hot chocolate and grill sausages for instance. And if you are in need for a car to travel around, they have that covered too! They have a van and a saloon car for rent. And after you have skied enough and would like to explore the Lapland nature from the ground level you can rent a snowmobile straight from their office. So, they have basically everything that you need for your holiday.

The design of the apartments and furniture is classical Finnish and pleases your eye. They also have sauna and jacuzzi for your use where you can relax after a long day in the slopes. I can warmly recommend this accommodation.

Saavuimme Pyhälle 11.2.2020. Sääennuste oli kääntynyt näyttämään vain paria pakkasastetta ja pilvistä lähes koko vierailumme ajaksi. Luultavasti emme tulisi näkemään revontulia tai edes juurikaan auringonpaistetta. Emme antaneet kuitenkaan tämän häiritä.

Ensimmäiset kaksi päivää majoituimme Pyhä Igluilla. Heillä on useita huoneistoja, joissa sänky on omassa ”iglussa”. Tämä majoituspaikka ylitti kaikki odotuksemme ja olimme todella tyytyväisiä vierailuumme. Ystävällinen ja avulias henkilökunta osasi ottaa tarpeemme huomioon. Omistaja on myös todella mukava ja hänen kanssaan oli mukava jutella aina kun häneltä liikeni aikaa. Vierailumme tuntui enemmän siltä, kuin olisi käynyt kavereiden luona kylässä kuin vierailulta majoituskohteessa.

Asia, josta todella nautin, oli se, että sinulla on käytettävissä täysin varusteltu oma keittiö, jossa voit laittaa ruokaa. Mielestäni on suuri etu, että talvilomareissulla ei tarvitse syödä joka päivä ravintolassa ja tätä kautta säästää rahaa. Pihapiiriin kuuluu myös kota, jossa voit viettää aikaa, juoda kuumaa kaakaota ja vaikka paistaa makkaraa. Ja jos olet auton tarpeessa, hoituu tämänkin heidän kauttansa. Voit vuokrata pakettiauton tai farmarin, jolla pääset liikkumaan kätevästi esimerkiksi Luostolle. Kun olet lasketellut tarpeeksi ja haluat nähdä erämaata maasta käsin, voit myös vuokrata moottorikelkan käyttöösi suoraan toimistosta. Kyseessä on siis todella monipuolisen palvelun majoituskohde!

Outdoor activities

In the area of Pyhätunturi and in Pyhä-Luosto National Park, there are heaps of things to do aside from skiing. I personally like to get to know as many activities during my holiday as possible. More activities equal more memories to tell and more pictures to take.

We headed to Arctic Husky Farm and attended to husky safari. The noise level was quite high when we entered to the area where the dogs and sleighs were. That’s because they were full of energy and ready to haul you through the wilderness. But right away when we started the sound level dropped and we cruised peacefully through the snowy forest.

If you attend to husky safari with Arctic Husky Farm with your friend, you both get the change to be the driver. It was cool feeling to be behind the sleigh kind of being the captain of that vessel. It felt almost like being some sort of explorer ready to the adventure. But be sure that you help the dogs when there’s uphill and don’t brake too much. Otherwise you’ll get bad look from them. After the safari you get to know more to the dogs and if they have puppies you get to pet those fluffy fellas.

Pyhätunturin ja Pyhä-Luosto kansallispuiston alueella on runsaasti erilaista tekemistä, laskettelun tai hiihdon lisäksi. Henkilökohtaisesti halusimme tutustua mahdollisimman moneen eri aktiviteettiin, jotta meillä olisi mahdollisimman paljon muistoja matkastamme. Ja totta kai, jotta saisin mahdollisimman paljon kuvia.

Suuntasimme automme kohti Pyhän ja Luoston välissä olevaa Arctic Husky, jossa tarkoituksena oli ottaa osaa huskysafarille. Kun pääsimme perille, kävelimme alueelle, jossa koirat meitä odottivat, oli äänitaso melkoisen korkealla. Syy siihen on, että koirat olivat täynnä energiaa ja valmiina vetämään meitä läpi erämaan. Heti kun pääsimme lähtemään liikkeelle, äänitaso putosi ja kruisailimme rauhallisesti läpi lumisen metsän.

Kun osallistut kaverin kanssa huskysafarille Arctic Husky Farmilla, pääsette molemmat vuorostanne kuskiksi. Oli mahtava tunne olla reen takana ohjastamassa sitä, kuin aluksen kapteenina. Tuntui kuin olisi ollut tutkimusmatkailija lähdössä kohti uusia seikkailuja. Muista kuitenkin auttaa koiria aina kun edessä on ylämäki, äläkä jarruttele liikaa. Koirat kyllä huomaavat, jos koitat luistaa velvollisuuksistasi ja saatat saada pahoja katseita. Safarin jälkeen pääset tutustumaan koiriin vielä lähemmin ja jos heillä sattuu olemaan pentuja, pääset silittämään näitä karvapalloja.

One of my favorite activities during our visit was definitely a reindeer safari. If the husky safari was fast paced and energetic this was completely the opposite. I really enjoyed the safari that Reindeer Park Kopara offered to us. The theme of it was slow and calm. There is properly time to relax when you are sitting nice and tight under the warming blanket while enjoying the fresh air and beautiful nature.

After the safari you can walk in the reindeer trail where you get to see them living their life in the paddock. You also can feed them with the food that is provided by the reindeer park. In that same area, right next to the reindeer paddock is over hundred years old reindeer hut. That hut was used by the reindeer herders many years ago, when they were working in the wilderness. It was interesting to go inside because it is not the typical hut to visit.

Yksi mielekkäimmistä aktiviteeteistä, joita koimme vierailumme aikana oli porosafari. Jos huskysafari oli nopeatempoinen ja energinen, oli tämä täydellinen vastakohta. Nautin täysin siemauksin porosafarista, jonka Poropuisto Kopara tarjosi meille. Teema oli hidas ja rauhallinen. Safarin aikana voit kunnolla rentoutua, kun istuskelet reessä lämmittävän viltin alla raikkaasta ulkoilmasta ja luonnosta nauttien.

Safarin jälkeen voit kävellä pitkin poropolkua, jonka varrella pääset näkemään poroja aitauksessaan. Voit myös ruokkia niitä ruoalla, jonka poropuisto on laittanut tarjolle kannellisiin laatikoihin, aitauksien ulkopuolelle. Samalla alueella, aitauksen välittömässä läheisyydessä, on myös yli sata vuotta vanha poromiesten mökki. Mökkiä käytettiin aikanaan lepo- ja nukkumispaikkana, kun poromiehet työskentelivät erämaassa. Oli mielenkiintoista mennä mökkiin sisään, koska kyseessä ei ole mikään täysin tavallinen mökki.

From slopes to trails

At least once a year, I try to go somewhere where I can snowboard. And while we were in Pyhätunturi, I couldn’t just pass that opportunity. I needed to hit the slopes.

For my girlfriend it was her first time ever alpine skiing. But apparently, she’s really fast to learn because we didn’t even get one ride down until she already realized what she needs to do and how to operate the skis.

We were snowboarding and skiing in two different days. The weather during our visit wasn’t the most appealing one but we didn’t let it bother us. It was actually very beautiful when the top of Pyhätunturi was covered with thick clouds. The scene was somehow peaceful and subtle with just few tones in it. And it wasn’t even that hard to go down the slopes. The visibility was surprisingly good and when we got below the clouds in roughly 200-300 meters altitude the visibility turned great again.

One recommendation for you while you are on the top of Pyhätunturi is to visit in the scenic hut called “Maisematupa”. It is located when you head towards the north slope. There you can enter inside, light the fire and take a small break from skiing.

We liked the slopes of Pyhätuntri a lot. There is something for everybody. If you are beginner or intermediate skier, you can choose from many different routes. If you are more advanced or almost pro level rider there’s great off-road routes to enjoy. We also liked the helpfulness of the staff in the ski rentals. They were quick and understandable to give us the best solution and everything worked smoothly.

Vähintään kerran vuodessa koitan päästä lumilautailemaan. Tämän kerran kun jo valmiiksi olimme Pyhätunturilla, en voinut olla ohittamatta tilaisuutta, vaan rinteeseen oli päästävä.

Tyttöystäväni ei ollut lasketellut kertaakaan aiemmin. Hän oppi kuitenkin todella nopeasti mitä tehdä ja miten suksia käytetään. Emme nimittäin päässeet edes yhtä laskua alas, kun hän jo viiletti menemään, kuin kokenut laskija konsanaan.

Laskettelimme kahtena erillisenä päivänä. Kumpanakaan näistä päivistä sää ei ollut se upein mahdollinen auringonpaisteen täyteinen pakkaspäivä. Emme antaneet tämän kuitenkaan häiritä meidän lasketteluamme. Itseasiassa, pilvien ympäröimän Pyhätunturin huipulla oli hyvin kaunista. Maisema oli rauhoittava ja hienovarainen, jossa oli vain muutamia vaaleita sävyjä. Laskettelukaan ei lopulta ollut niin hankalaa tässä säässä. Näkyvyys oli yllättävän hyvä ja kun pääsimme n. 200-300 metriin ja pilvien alapuolelle, oli näkyvyys lähes loistava.

Yksi vierailemisen arvoinen paikka Pyhätunturin huipulla on Maisematupa. Se sijaitsee lähellä pohjoisrinteen alkupistettä. Täällä voit tehdä, vaikka tulet ja rentoutua tovin ja ottaa pienen paussin laskettelusta.

Me pidimme Pyhän rinteistä toden teolla. Rinteitä löytyy joka lähtöön ja jokaiselle on jotakin. Aloittelijoille ja harrastelijoille on monta eri rinnettä, joista valita. Jos olet taas kokeneempi laskija voit valita useasta eri vapaalaskurinteestä. Myös hiihtokeskuksen ja vuokraamojen henkilökunta oli oikein osaavaa ja avuliasta. Löysimme heidän avullaan helposti tarvittavat varusteet ja saimme parhaan ratkaisun tarpeisiimme.

One good way to get to know to the nature is really go to the ground level. During the wintertime it could be a bit hard with normal shoes but luckily there is snowshoes. We headed to Pyhä-Luosto National Park to seek the snowy fells. And we indeed found snow. Couple times when I stick the 125 centimetres long stick to the ground it went all the way through the snow. At some parts even my hand disappeared with it a little. All the trees were covered with heavy snow and again the scenery was very beautiful despite the thick snowfall and grey colors.

Around Pyhätunturi there are also some snowshoeing tracks for you to walk on. They are marked to the maps and in the terrain too. However, some of them are well maintained paths and you can actually walk on them with normal shoes. That’s why I encourage you to go off the beaten path and look a bit further to get the full experience with the snowshoes.

Yksi hyvä tapa liikkua luonnossa on tutkia sitä maastossa ja metsässä. Talvella tämä saattaa olla normaaleilla kengillä hieman hankalaa, mutta onneksi on lumikengät. Me suunnistimme Pyhä-Luoston kansallispuistoon etsimään lumisia tuntureita ja me todellakin löysimme lunta. Pariin otteeseen, kun tökkäsin 125cm pitkän sauvan maata kohti, se humpsahti vauhdilla lumen läpi. Pariin otteeseen lumeen upposi sauvan lisäksi reilusti myös käsivartta. Lunta siis riitti. Kaikki puut olivat myös vahvan tykkylumen peitossa. Vallitseva maisema näytti todella kauniilta, huolimatta siitä, että ajoittain pyrytti rankasti lunta ja värimaailma oli hyvinkin harmaa.

Myös Pyhätunturin ympärillä on lumikenkäilyreittejä kierreltäväksi. Ne ovat merkattu karttaan ja myös maastossa on selkeät merkinnät. Pidä kuitenkin mielessä, että jotkut niistä ovat itseasiassa hyvin hoidettuja polkuja, joissa voit kävellä normaaleilla kengilläkin. Rohkaisenkin sinua hyppäämään hieman polun ulkopuolelle, jotta saat parhaan mahdollisen lumikenkäilyelämyksen.

Exploring the wilderness

If you want to see a bit more or the wilderness in Lapland, good option is to take a snowmobile and cruise through the fells and hills. That’s what we did too. There is vast network of snowmobile routes around area of Pyhä-Luosto National Park and Pyhätunturi. You can easily spend the whole day snowmobiling around and enjoying your time in the nature.

We drove from Pyhätunturi to Luosto starting our journey towards North-East towards Luosto. The weather was again quite cloudy but not too bad. The routes were fairly in good conditions but with one exception. Driving back from Luosto towards Pyhätunturi the track was in horrible conditions. I reckon it was due the higher temperatures, snow and then colder weather again. It was quite strenuous to drive but we made it safely back though.

Jos haluat nähdä vähän enemmän ja laajemmin lapin erämaata, suosittelen lähtemään liikkeelle moottorikelkalla. Sillä on mukava viilettää läpi tuntureiden ja vaarojen. Näin teimme myös me. Pyhä-Luoston alueella on kattava moottorikelkkareittiverkosto, josta löytyy runsaasti ajettavaa. Yksi kokonainen päivä menee helposti kelkkaillessa ja luonnosta nauttimisessa.

Me ajoimme Pyhätunturilta Luostolle, lähtien liikkeelle kaakkoon päin. Sää oli taas melko pilvinen, mutta ei kuitenkaan huono. Kaikki reitit olivat pääosin hyvässä kunnossa yhtä poikkeusta lukuun ottamatta. Kun olimme tulossa Luostolta takaisin Pyhällä, lyhyintä reittiä pitkin, oli se aikamoista perunapeltoa. Luulen, että tämä johtuu lauhasta säästä, lumisateesta ja taas pakastumisesta. Ajomatka oli melko rankka, mutta selvisimme tuvallisesti perille takaisin Pyhätunturille.

Successful holiday

Our trip to Pyhätunturi and Pyhä-Luosto National Park was truly a success. We really enjoyed our time in there and could have stayed longer. Everything worked well from accommodations to ski rentals, snowmobiling and other activities.
