Jokela Kuvina - Kuvia ja Tarinoita Jokelasta (Images and Stories from Jokela) is broad art project by Sami Laitinen. The town of Jokela is Sami’s former home town where he grew up and the idea of this project was to give something back to Jokela. Sami feels that the time that he spent in there, gave him so much so he wanted to use his profession to give something back.

Jokela Kuvina - Kuvia ja Tarinoita Jokelasta project was funded by two grants, one from the municipality of Tuusula (in which Jokela belongs to) and the second from Taiteen edistämiskeskus TaiKe (Arts Promotion Centre of Finland). The idea was to create comprehensive project, using not only one medium but multiple forms of art and impression. Sami wanted to tell stories of the people of Jokela since they are the true spirit of the town. His mission was to gather those stories in captivating way and mold them together with captivating documentary moments of the every day life.

Along with the website and social media, (Instagram and Facebook) the three major mediums are Jokela Kuvina short Documentary (which you can watch from above), Jokela Kuvina art exhibition and Jokela Kuvina photo book. With these final “products” Sami wanted to give something culturally and artistically significant and meaningful from which the whole town of Jokela can be proud of. Selected collection of images you can find below.

Exhibition, documentary and the photo book all have received exceptional feedback. The municipality of Tuusula thanked Sami of exceeding their expectations. Sami has been very honored to hear how the project as touched the people of Jokela and/or former villagers and how they’ve seen their hometown in a new light.

The photo exhibition can be seen in Rajala Proshop gallery in Helsinki Finland in 2-30.6.2022.
