Behind the keyboard again
It’s been a while since I’ve been writing a blog. I came back to Finland in the end on June to celebrate the Finnish midsummer with friends. Summer cottage, long nights and sauna. That was perfect. But from that point on things haven’t gone like I expected. I grabbed some major health issues and lot of things have been on pause in my life for almost half a year. When you’re really into doing something and active person and then when it’s taken away from you… Well, you can imagine. Luckily, I have some really good friends and family that given me energy. Thank you. Just must be optimist and stay happy. Things are gong to be good. “Everything is gonna be all right” – Bob Marley
I haven’t been completely paralysed. I’ve been able to do some things that support my goals that I’m aiming for. One cool thing for me, when I came back to Finland from my travels, was that I had completely open book. From the point when I first stepped through the doors of my school in the first grade, I’ve always had something. Werther it was summer holiday, another grade in school, summer work, university and work again. But this time, I didn’t have anything. I felt like 400-page book which is blank. It’s a bit scary moment because you don’t have anything. But, in the other hand that is great. I felt like that now I can do anything that I want. Anything. So, I thought, what that would be. On my travels I’ve realized what I don’t want to do, so that’s a good start I guess. At the same time, I realized that we should do only the things that we really love to do. And when you put all in to it, usually it leads to something. If not, then the gummy bears are not divided evenly in this world. Anyways, I’m trying to do those things now. Time will tell where it leads me to.
Siitä on kerennyt vierähtää jo tovi, kun olen näpytellyt sormet sauhuten blogikirjoituksia. Tulin siis Suomeen sopivasti juhannukseksi. Sehän meni loistavasti mökillä kavereiden kanssa saunoen ja ruisleipää narskutellen. Täydellistä. Siitä lähtien asiat eivät ole kuitenkaan menneet ihan niin kuin siinä kuuluisassa Strömsåssä. Inhottavan terveyshaitan takia, monet asiat ovat jääneet täysin nollaan. Aktiivinen ohminen kun olen ja kun se otetaan pois, niin kyllä siinä hermoja koetellaan. Onneksi omaan todella hyviä ystäviä ja perheen, joiden avulla olen saanut energiaa. Kiitos. Täytyy vaan pysyä optimistisine. En ole kuitenkaan täysin rapmana ollut. Olen kyennyt tekemään asioita, jotka jollain tapaa ovat olleet tukena omien tavoitteiden saavuttamisessa. Yksi hieno asia on se, että kun tulin takasin Suomeen, minulla oli täysin avoin kirja edessäni. Siitä pisteestä eteenpäin, kun astuin ensimmäistä kertaa koulun ovista sisään, on minulla aina ollut jotain. Oli se sitten koulu, kesätyö, koulu tai oikea työ, niin aina on ollut jotain. Tällä kertaa kuitenkin, ei yhtään mitään. Olo oli kuin 400- sivuisella kirjalla, jossa ei ole ollenkaan tekstiä. Tilanne on hieman pelottavakin, koska ei ole yhtään mitään, mutta toisaalta se on taas absoluuttisen mahtava tilanne. Tuntui siltä, että voin tehdä ihan mitä vain. Siis aevan mitä vuon. Matkustaessani tajusin sen, että mitä EN halua tehdä ja onhan sekin jo hyvä alku, luultavasti. Samalla tajusin sen, että ihmisten pitää tehdä niitä asioita, joita hän oikeasti rakastaa tehdä. Ja kun joskus kokeilet ja laitat sen kuuluisin 110 pinnaa peliin, niin yleensä ne myös johtavat johonkin. Jos ei, niin silloin se tarkoittaa sitä, että kaikki nallekarkit ei jakaudu tasan tällä sinisellä kuulalla. Aika näyttää miten käy omalla kohdalla.
Scotland is calling
I’m thankful that I’ve been fortunate to be able to travel and see many places already. That is something that I really like to do. See new places, learn new cultures, meet new people and all in all get perspective. Therefore, I was excited when my mate
from Edinburgh, that I met in Melbourne, invited me to pay I visit. I checked my calendar, blank. Money situation, rob a bank. Great. Health, yeah, it’s getting there. So, I booked flights, chatted with my mates and now we have a Melbourne reunion with all the British blokes, me and one Gimli.
Scotland is a place where I’ve wanted to visit because of highland cattle, kilts and Scrooge McDuck. We’ll see how many of those I’ll see. My expectations are quite subtle. My research says that Edinburgh is beautiful, people are friendly (although you can’t understand what they’re saying) and there’s lot of good vegan restaurants. Let’s see what this long, or I could say, longer weekend brings.
Olen erittäin kiitollinen siitä, että olen ollut onnekas saadessani matkustaa ympäri maailmaa ja nähdä uskomattomia paikkoja. Tämä on jotain, mitä oikeasti haluan tehdä. Uusien paikkojen näkeminen, uusiin kulttuureihin tutustuminen ja uusien ihmisten tapaaminen ja erityisesti perspektiivin saaminen ovat asioita, joiden takia sinäkin tätä tekstiä luet. Näistä syistä, olin innoissani, kun kaverini Edinburgista, jonka tapasin Melbournessa asuessani, kutsui meikäläisen kyläilemään. Tarkistan kalenterin, tyhjä. Rahatilanne, ryöstä pankki. Mahtavaa. Terveys, noo siinähän se sinnittelee. Eihän siinä ollut muita vaihtoehtoja, kuin varata lennot. Nyt sitten meillä on Melbourne ryhmän jälleen tapaaminen Brittien ja yhden Gimlin kanssa.
Skotlanti on yksi maista, joissa olen aidosti halunnut vierailla. Ylämaankarja, kiltit ja Roope-Setä. Saa nähdä kuinka moni noista asioista tulee kohdattua. Odotukseni ovat melko neutraalit. Oma tutkimustoimistoni on ilmoittanut, että Edinburgh on kaunis kaupunki ja se omaa monia hyviä vegaanisia ravintoloita. Yksi haittapuoli on ehkä se, että tulen tuskin ymmärtämään sanakaan mitä minulle puhutaan, erittäin vahvan ja rouhean murteen takia. Saa nähdä, mitä tämä pitkähkö viikonloppu tuo tullessaan.
From Helsinki to Edinburgh
I prefer morning flights. In that way you have time in your destination so that one travel day won’t go for just traveling. Bus to the airport, souvenir shopping and to the gate. 8.25am. The plane is still on the ground. 8.37 we’re in the air. It is supposed to be huge blizzard in almost all over Finland so managed to escape from that. Kjehkjeh. Happy to be traveling Finnair. Everything works, planes are clean and the best thing, you get blueberry juice. Thank you, Finnair.
Pidän enemmän aamu -kuin iltalennoista. Näin kaikki aika ei mene vain päivässä matkustamiseen, vaan kohteessa kerkeää myös nähdä jotain ensimmäisenä päivänä. Bussi lentokentälle, tuliaisostokset haltteriin ja lähtöportille. 8.25. Lentomasiina vielä maan tasalla. 8.37 ilmavirtaus nostattaa meidät pehmeästi ilmaan, moottorien avustamana tietenkin. Lähtöaamuna oli määrä olla älytön lumimyräkkä Helsingissä ja koko kaupunki menee kaaokseen. Mukavatahan sitä on paeta rauhallisesti Finnairilla lennellen ja mikä parasta, mustikkamehua siemaillen.
Edinburgh day one
Edinburgh airport is rather small and easy to get around. You don’t need to walk two kilometres to get from point a to point b. Connections to city are also decent. There’s the taxis of course but and addition to those there’s a bus line and a tram line. I chose the tram line, since it terminated in Place where my friend was waiting for me. I don’t know how the busses work, but in my opinion the tram is convenient and not too expensive. I recommend getting a return ticket, if you’re going back to the airport. It costs 8,50£ (9,50 €) and the return journey is open.
The stereotypical weather of UK and in this case Scotland, is grey, rainy and wet. Well, this time the stereotype was correct. It didn’t bother though. It was cool to see and feel the environment as real as possible. I got to meet my gingered friend who was jumping out of joy when he saw me. Spent some quality time in a pub enjoying English breakfast. It was traditional kind of pub/restaurant in place called Omni Centre. The prices weren’t even that bad, roughly 6£ (6,70 €).
A place worth to visit in here is Edinburgh Botanical Gardens. Huge area, lots to see and experience. Crisp day in late November may not be the best time to visit in there, considering the blossom of all the flowers but everything is subjective. We decided to compete by pronouncing the name of the plants in Latin. I’d call it a tide. Worth place to visit, stroll around and spent few hours wondering the nature.
That’s no wonder that there’s heaps of pubs in Edinburgh but that’s interesting thing that lot of them are dedicated to someone. Or then they’re named after some famous person. Good example of that is The Conan Doyle pub in 71-73 York Pl. This guy is famous for writing, not more or less, than Sherlock Holmes books. If you want to experience something coolish kind of thing, visit in there. One other place worth to visit, if you’re around Leith area is The Central Bar. Great atmosphere, nice looking place with U-shaped bar desk and real pub mood.
Edinburghin lentokenttä on suhteellisen pieni ja siellä on helppo liikkua. Se ei olut kuin yksi tuhaus ja olin ulkona, raitiovaunupysäkillä. Taxit ja bussit ovat tietysti vaihtoehto, muta valitsin ratikan, koska päätepysäkki oli suoraan siellä, missä minun oli määrä tavata kaverini. Jos olet matkustamassa takaisin lentokentälle, matkasi päätyttyä, suosittelen ostamaan paluulipun, jossa paluupäivä ja aika ovat avoimet. Se maksaa suurin piirtein 9,50 €.
Stereotyyppinen Ison-Britannian sää, ja tällä kertaa Skotlannin, on harmaa, vilpoinen ja sateinen. Tällä kertaa stereotypia piti paikkansa. Mutta eihän sen pidä antaa haitata, sehän on vain osa seikkailua. Tapasin onnesta hyppivän oranssin kaverini aamupalan merkeissä. Paikka oli perinteinen pubi/ravintola ja hinnoiltaan varsin kohtuullinen, English Breakfast kustansi vajaat 7€. Sijainti, Omni Center, Edinburgh.
Vierailemisen arvoinen paikka on Edinburghin kasvitieteellinen puutarha. Valtavan kokoinen alue täynnä kasveja ja kukkia ja jäniksiä ja ja. Paras kukkimiskausi oli jo mennyt ohi, mutta kaikki kauneushan on vain subjektiivista. Jos jotain mielenkiintoista ja tavallisesta poikkeavaa tekemistä kaipaa tällä visiitille, niin koettakaa ääntää kasvien latinankielisiä nimiä. Siinäpä sitä vasta puuhaa kerrakseen.
Se nyt ei sinänsä ole ihme, että Edinburghissa on paljon pubeja (tai ylipäätään koko Brittien saarella), mutta se on huomioitavan arvoista, että monet niistä on omistettu jollekin. Monet niistä on nimetty jonkun kuuluisan henkilön mukaan tms. Esim The Conan Doyle Pub, joka on nimetti tietysti, ei enempää eikä vähempää, Conan Doylen mukaan. Hänhän on siis tunnettu Sherlock Holmes kirjoistaan. Jos satut talsimaan Leithin alueella, niin vierailemisen arvoinen paikka on The Central Bar. Tyylikkään näköinen paikka, jossa on U:n muotoinen baaritiski, halvat hinnat ja aito pubitunnelma.
Edinburgh day two
Edinburgh is the most touristic city in Scotland, and that you can see in the streets too. You hear all the time people speaking Spanish, German, Italian and Russian. You name it. This observation strengthens when you walk up to the Calton Hill. But, you can’t let that be a thing that bugs you It is how it is and must live with it. Me and one American guy, who I met in here through my other mate, took the walk up in there. The weather was Scotland’s national weather, windy and rainy. Up there are few attractions, luckily all close to each other. The Nelson Monument, Dugald Stewart Monument and probably the most famous, National Monument. It’s build for the soldier that fought in Napoleonic Wars. Construction started at 1826 and ended at 1829, unfinished. Lazy Scottish people. Probably they were too greedy with their salaries.
The first impressions for me about Edinburgh is that it is old city. In UK, I’ve been in London, but it’s nothing like that in here. Lot of the buildings look really like, because of the grey/yellow/mix and match stone bricks. It is beautiful, but in its own way though. Cool thing in the CBD (as we say in Oz) is that there’s heaps of these “closes”. Small allies and pass throughs, sometimes dead ends, which are really photogenic. It’s nice just wander around and look up for those.
As a food wise Edinburgh is, I would say, lively. There’s loads of pubs where you find the traditional pub food, English breakfast and often haggis. Then, there’s quite a few Indian restaurants. Both, cheap and a bit more expensive. Dishoom is a place to visit if you want something a bit fancier but still not that expensive. It’s specialized to Bombay street kitchen, with a modern twist of course. My mom’s colleague recommended this place for me, since she’s visited there numerous of times. Have to admit that I was convinced. Well-seasoned food and nice atmosphere. And in the end, it wasn’t even that expensive. We were six soldiers eating and celebrating my birthday in there and the bill was somewhere in 150£. Could be lot more, if you consider the quality of the food.
Another place to mention to get something to fill your tummy with is place called The Baked Potato Shop in 56 Cockburn St. Tasty stuffed potatoes and the variety of the fillings is overwhelming. For me it was hard choice again and I saw I got the worker behind desk nervous with my thinking. They also serve vegan Haggis, just to mention. I’m not 100% sure but this place might be all vegan (great thing) or at least vegetarian. Don’t let that thing to scare you away though. If you’re just hungry go with the small potato with two fillings. That already is huge. Can’t imagine how big the medium or then the large would’ve been.
Edinburgh turistikaupunkina näkyy vahvasti sen kaduilla. Kävellessä kaupungilla kuulee Italiaa, Espanjaa, Saksaa ja Venäjää, näin muutamia kieliä mainitakseni. Tämä turrekaupungin havainto myös vahvistuu, kun trekkaa ylös Calton Hillille. Mutta tämän seikan ei saa antaa häiritä, vaan sen kanssa on elettävä. Tilaa on kaikille. Minä ja eräs amerikkalainen kaveri, jonka tapasin toisen kaverin kautta, kavuttiin ylös kukkulalle katselamaan nähtävyyksiä. Säähän oli taas kansallisen tuulinen, sateinen ja kylmä. Calton Hill on kuitenkin käymisen arvoinen paikka ja siellä on muutama nähtävyys aivan vierivieressä. Löytyy The Nelson Monument, Dugald Stewart Monument ja Skotlannnin kansallismonumetti. Jälkimmäinen on rakennettu sotilaille, jotka taistelivat Napoleonin aikaisissa sodissa. Rakennustyöt alkoivat 1826 ja loppuivat 1829, rakennus tosin ei tullut valmiiksi. Liekö saituus palkkojen suhteen iskenyt.
Ensimmäinen vaikutelma, mikä itselle tuli kaupungista, on vanha. Olen aiemmin ollut Lontoossa, Brittien saarilla, mutta Edinburgh ei ole mitään sen kaltaista. Monet talot näyttävät hyvin samalaisilta kiitos harmaankeltaisten tiilien/kivien sekoituksen. Kaupunki on kaunis, mutta omalla tavallaan. Mikään Mykonos paikka ei ole. Hienoja paikkoja löytyy erityisesti CBD:n (kuten Australiassa sanotaan) alueelta. (CBD tarkoittaa Centeal Business Districtiä eli keskustaa). Alueella on paljon ”closes”. Pieniä kujia, jotka saattavat päätyä salaiseen puutarhaan tai olla vain umpikujia. Erittäin kuvauksellisia paikkoja ovat joka tapauksessa. Pelkästään ympäriinsä haahuili ja niiden etsiminen on mukavaa tekemistä.
Ruokailun näkökulmasta Edinburgh on, eloisa. Pubeja on tosiaan paljon ja näistä saa useimmiten sitä perinteistä pubi ruokaa, haggis mukaan lukien. Intialaisia ravintoloita on silmiinpistävä määrä ja yksi erittäin mainio sellainen on nimeltään Dishoom. Se on paikka, jos haluat lauantaidinnerille jotain hieman lähikebabbia parempaa. Paikka ei kuitenkaan ole valkoisten pöytäliinojen mukainen fine dining, vaan enemmänkin smart casual. Ravintola tarjoilee Mumbailaista ruokaa, modernilla twistillä. Äitini kollega osasi suositella ravintolaa, useiden käyntiensä perusteella. Täytyy myöntää, että olin vakuuttunut. Hyvin maustettua ruokaa ja erittäin mukava tunnelma. Loppujen lopuksi, hintakaan ei ollut älyttömän korkea, 150£ kuuden hengen illallisesta juomineen ei ole päätä huomaava summa, noinkin tasokkaassa ja viihtyisässä paikassa.
Toinen maininnan arvoinen paikka on The Baked Potato Shop, 56 Cockburn Streetilla. Erittäin maukasta täytettyä perunaa erilaisilla täytevaihtoehdoilla. Ja niiden vaihtoehtojen määrä! Kyllä meinasi ravintolan työntekijällä jo hermo mennä omien arpomisia seurauksena. Tarjolla on myös mmm. vegaania haggista. Älä anna paikan vegaanisuuden/vegetarismin pelästyttää, vaan astu rohkeasti punaisesta ovesta sisään ja nauti erittäin edullisesta perunaherkusta. Jos on normaali nälkä, niin voin helposti sanoa, että pieni peruna kahdella täytteellä riittää. Uskokaa pois.
Edinburgh day three
The Calton Hill gives you all right view over the city with some landmarks and walking paths. If you’re not scared to walk a bit more in the Scottish Highlands like environment in harsh weather, like I wasn’t, the Arthur’s Seat is a must place to go. I was a wake 7.30am sharp, nevertheless a bit longer night. Grabbed my bag and hopped to double decker bus. I probably didn’t give that nice picture of me to the other morning strollers, while I was shit scared and screaming in the second floor of the bus and still in the first bench row.
You can get the bus from the centrum to Holyrood Park, where this magnificent attraction is located. Thing to mention is that the single ticket to the buses and trams costs 1,60£ and day ticket 4£. Not that expensive. Although, in the downtown area you don’t need them. If you’re staying or going somewhere in the suburbs like Leith or Trinity etc, then I’d recommend them.
In Holyrood Park you must start the ascend to the top. And the top in this case is on the top of ancient volcano, which is inactive nowadays though. Don’t do like me and walk along the Queen’s Drive half way around this hill but look for the paths that goes straight up. You save time and nerves and there’s nothing to see in the other side really. Trust me on this one. From the Arthur’s Seat the views over Edinburgh are great. You get to feel the Highland experience even though you’re not in the Highlands. When I was visiting it was bloody windy and it almost blew me away. Me withstanding the cold is poor so I needed to head back down quite quick. On my way I was able to look for the Haggis though. They’re six legged small creatures with sharp fangs and short black fur. Related to squirrel but at some point, of evolution parted their ways. Nasty little things but definitely a bucket list thing if you see one of them. I didn’t have time, but you should also try the Hunter’s Bog landmark in the same hills. Should also be great views but just a bit closer on the city that Arthur’s Seat.
I spent some time just walking around the city taking pictures and looking in to the little shops in Victoria Street and The Royal Mile. That area is the most touristic part of the town, but I’d say that worth to visit. Souvenir shops are all the same, nevertheless you’re in the jungles of Indonesia, CBD of Melbourne or middle of Manhattan, full of people and same shit different city. For me it was run and gun. Go in, look for the fridge magnet, pay for it and get out.
If you’re into museums, like normal tou… op op op op - I’m not a tourist, I’m a hrmh a traveller – should be interested in museums. They teach, they take let you understand things and most of the time they keep you out of the rain, if needed. I’ve been in many museums during my travels. One nice things in the Scotland National Museum is that it’s not too big. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not looked through in 15 minutes but what I mean that is that things are packed like to a nutshell. Animals, nation, geography, science etc. Nice and easy. In this museum you can also meet Dolly the sheep. First ever cloned animal. Famous fella. And for the people who admire Scrooge McDuck, like I do, satisfying fact is that this museum is free to visit. So, you can save your pennies to shortbreads instead.
Jo edellä mainittu Calton Hill, antaa mukavat näkymät kaupungin ylle, muutamine maamerkkeineen ja kävelyreitteineen. Jos haluat kuitenkin vähän enemmän korkeutta ja spektaakkelimaisia näkyviä, niin suuntaa Arthur’s Seatille. Tänne trekkaa tovin, mutta sehän ei minua pelottanut, hieman lyhyempien yöunienkaan jälkeen. 7.30 tasan olin ylhäällä. Murot nassuun ja bussiin. En varmaan antanut parasta kuvaa itsestäni muille aamullisille kulkijoille, huutaessani kauhusta, kaksikerroksisenbussin yläkerrassa.
Keskustasta pääsee bussilla mukavasti Holyrood Parkille, jossa tämä mahtava kukkula sijaitsee. Mainitsemisen arvoinen asia Edinburghin busseista on, että kertalippu maksaa 1,60£ ja päivälippu 4£. Vaihtorahaa et saa, joten kanna kolikoita tasaraha mukanasi, jollet halua maksaa ylimääräistä.
Holyrood Parkissa sitten alkaa ylösnousu vuoren huipulle. Vuori on itseasiassa muinainen tulivuori, joka on miljoonien vuosien saatossa kuitenkin de aktivoitunut. Suosittelen olemaan tekemättä kuten minä. Älä kävele Queens Driveä (autotie) puoleen väliin asti vaan katso, mihin ihmiset menevät ja jos eivät mene, tutkaile pieniä polkuja, jotka luikertelevat huipulle. Säästät aikaa ja hermoja. Nyppylän toisella puolelle ei myöskään ole juurikaan nähtävää. Usko pois.
Huipulta näkymät Edinburghin ylle ovat kyllä kiipeämisen arvoiset. Täälllä pääsee kokemaan hieman Ylämaiden tunnelmaa, vaikket ylämailla ollakaan. Oman vierailun aikana oli niin helkkarin tuulista ja kylmää, että kyllä veri valahti -2 asteiseksi melko nopeasti ja piti suunnata takaisin alas. Matkalla, olin kuitenkin kykenevä, suuresta hypotermiasta huolimatta, skouttailemaan Haggiksia. Ne ovat kuusijalkaisia otuksia, joilla on terävät kulmahampaat ja lyhyt musta turkki. Ilkeitä otuksia, mutta ehdottomasti bucketlist juttu, jos sellaisen sattuu näkemään. Itsellä ei ollut aikaa, mutta jos sinulta löytyy, suosittelen tarkastamaan myös Hunter’s Bog maamerkin, samoilla kukkuloilla. Pitäisi olla myös hienot näkymät, mutta piirun verran lähempänä, kuin Arthur’s Seat, Edinburghin kaupunkia.
Tämän taistelun jälkeen vietin aikaa kaupungin keskustassa kävellen ja tutkaillen. Suuntasin Victoria Streetille ja The Royal Milellä. Tämä alue on sitä pahinta turrekeskittymää, mutta on se vierailun arvoinen paikka kuitenkin. Ei ole väliä oletko Indonesian viidakoissa, Melbournen keskustassa tai keskellä Manhattania, on turistikaupat samoja juttuja. Itselle missio oli tulos ja ulos. Magneetti kouraan ja homma hoidettu.
Jos haluat suunnata museoon, kuten normaali turi …. top top top – minähän en ole turisti, vaan krhm travelleri – tekee, niin lämpimästi voin suositelle Scottish National Museumia. Museothan ovat siitä kivoja, että ne opettavat, auttaa ymmärtämään ja hätätapauksessa toimivat sadesuojana. Mukava asia tässä museossa on se, että se ei ole niin turkasen suuri, kuten museot yleensä tuppaavat olemaan. Kaikki on pakattu suhteelliseen kompaktiin kokoon ja näyttelyt on helppo käydä läpi, älä kuitenkaan ymmärrä väärin, ei se vartissa ole käyty läpi. Täällä voit myös tavata Dolly lampaan, maailman ensimmäisen kloonatun nisäkkään. Ihmisille kuten minä, joiden idolina toimii Roope-Setä, tyydyttävä fakta on myös se, että tämä museo on täysin ilmainen. Woop woop ! Tulee siis säästettyä pennit shortbreadeihin.
Edinburgh day four and five
If you’re photographer, one place to go is Dean Village and Water of Leith Walk. This place is tranquil and pleasant even though there’s other travellers roaming here and there. It’s not too crowded though. The location, way from the traffic, is one key to the peaceful atmosphere in there. I got some good long exposure shots of a waterfall in there.
I also had the privilege to enjoy a real home cooked meal with my mate’s family. It’s a huge benefit, having friends around the world. You get to know to the real culture and the everyday life of the people of the place. I don’t think that that meal would’ve happened without my friend in here and just staying in some hostel or hotel.
On my last day, before catching the flight (which was delayed fair two hours) I hiked to the Edinburgh Castle. Well, I didn’t pay the fee to get in, because almost 17£ (20€) was a wee bee too price to my Scottish stingy soul. The views were adequate from the non-paid area, but hey at least I’ve seen the castle. And I’ve seen it whole from the distance, which is fine.
Haggis was (and should be to all the people visiting Scotland) a thing that I needed to try. I tried already vegan haggis on baked potato, which was good. I was kinda on the run already, so I just popped in to the nearest pub. The Royal Mile Tavern turned out to be pretty cool place from inside. Nicely decorated with old photographs from Edinburgh and the atmosphere was nice and cosy. Then came the moment of truth, haggis. For me the taste was a bit like our liver bake (maksalaatikko) in Finland. Likely because haggis contains liver and the taste of the organ is quite distinctive.
For me this trip to Scotland’s capital was all about to see my mates. We met back in Melbourne, apart from the American guy who I met in here through one of my mate. This goal was definitely fulfilled and I’m happy. To catch up with the lads, spent some quality time, play pool and hang around. Even though we haven’t seen in a year, it felt like we were just continuing were we left last time when we saw each other.
That brings be to the final statement of this story. When you’re traveling, you’re going to meet heaps of people. You hang with people, do things with people, work with people, travel with people and even umm, what ever you can do with people. At some point your paths are going to part and then you say, “it was so nice to spent time with you and travel together”. You agree that you’re gonna catch up like for SURE in no time. But then, it doesn’t happen. At this point You recognize how good friends have you made while traveling. With the people who are important to you or you are to them and you want to meet them again despite that you live in different country, you’ll somehow manage to meet up. I’ve been extremely fortunate that I’ve managed to meet that kind of people in the past couple of years in my life. That’s a thing that I can’t say anything else that I’m extremely thankful for. Thank you, guys. Thank you, Edinburgh, thank you my mates. On to the next adventure but meantime, remember to chillax people.
Valokuvauksellisesta näkökulmasta paikka, jossa suosittelen vierailemaan, on Dean Village ja Water of Leith Walk. Erittäin rauhallinen ja mukava siitäkin huolimatta, että ihmisiähän täälläkin liikkuu. Alueen sijainti, poissa autoista ja raskaimmasta liikenteestä, on todennäköisin syy paikan mukavuuteen. Muutamia hyviä otoksia tuli pitkällä valotusajalla napsittua.
Itsellä oli myös etuoikeutettu asema vieraille kaverini kodissa, ihka-aidoilla koti-illallisella. On erittäin suuri etu, että on ystäviä ympäri maailmaa. Pääset tutustumaan paikan/kansan oikeaan kulttuuriin ja näkemään, millaista heidän arki on. En usko, että se on mahdollista, jos asuu vain hotellissa. Ainakaan tämä ateria ei olisi ollut mahdollinen.
Viimeisenä päivänä, ennen lentokentällä suuntaamista, minulla oli vielä aikaa käydä Edinburghin Linnassa. Tai no, enhän minä sinne sisälle mennyt, kun pyysivät 17£ (20€). Perjantai sentään! Mitkään erityiset eivät näkymät olleet, maksuttomalta alueelta, mutta olenpahan ainakin käynyt. Ja olen kuitenkin nähnyt linnan kokonaisena, etäisyyden päästä, joka riittää minulle.
Haggis. Tuo asia, joka pitää olla jokaisen Skotlannissa vierailevan sielun ruokalistalla. Itse maistelin sitä The Royal Mile Tavernissa, jonne päädyin pienoisen kiireen takia. Paikka osoittautui kuitenkin oikein mukavaksi sisustuksensa takia. Sienillä oli myös paljon vanhoja valokuvia Edinburghista. Ja sitten, haggis. Itselle se maistui hieman maksalaatikolta, sisältäähän se maksaa ja sisäelinten maku on melko vahva.
Pääsyy, tähän reissuun Skotlannin pääkaupunkiin, oli nähdä kavereita. Tapasimme heidän kanssaan Melbournessa, amerikkalaista lukuun ottamatta, jonka tapasin paikan päällä kaverini kautta. Olen erittäin iloinen siitä, että tämä tavoitteeni tuli täytettyä. Tavata kavereita, pelata biljardia ja viettää aikaa yhdessä. Vaikka emme olleet vuoteen tavanneet, niin tuntui siltä, kuin juttu olisi jatkunut siitä, mihin se Australiassa jäi.
Tästä pääsenkin tämän tarinan loppukaneettiin. Kun matkustelet ympäri maita ja mantuja, tulet tapaamaan paljon ihmisiä. Hengailet ihmisten kanssa, teette asioita yhdessä, syötte yhdessä, matkustatte yhdessä ja teette, mitä nyt teettekään yhdessä. Jossain vaiheessa yhteinen taival kuitenkin päättyy ja on aika sanoa morjens. Sovitte, että varmasti nähdään uudestaan ihan pian. Mutta sitten, sitä ei tapahdukaan. Tässä vaiheessa huomaat, kuinka hyviä ystäviä olet tehnyt matkustaessasi. Ihmiset, jotka ovat sinulle, tai sinä olet heille, tärkeitä löytävät aina ajan ja paikan tavata. Siitäkin huolimatta, että elätte eri maissa, tuhansien kilometrien päässä, asia järjestyy. Olen äärettömän kiitollinen, että olen onnistunut tutustumaan tällaisiin ihmisiin elämässäni, viimeisen kahden vuoden aikana. Kiitos heille. Kiitos Edinburgh, kiitos kaverit, joita pääsin tapaamaan.
